Distress Ink Kit

I don't know about you, but I absolutely love the "mid-century modern" design aesthetic. It feels so playful and expressive, while being very graphic and easy to read. I wanted a set of ink brushes for Procreate that would allow me to do this style of illustration in Procreate, and so "Distress Ink Kit" was born! Coming with 30 brushes, it's packed with high-resolution decals, splatters, smears, crispy shaders, textures and an awesome quickshape ink brush!

This kit focuses on a specific workflow for designers, which you can learn about in the video above. We've included a "Quickshape Brush" which is just a great basic ink brush designed to be used with Color Drop in Procreate. The workflow is simple: draw your shapes, fill them in, and then do all your texturing in multiple clipping mask layers. Again, check out the video for more information!

Here's a gif showing how you can easily build up layers of marks.

Distress Ink Kit Includes:

  • QuickShape Pen: This is a buttery smooth ink pen with just the right amount of texture to the edges to look natural, but it conveniently works great with QuickShape and ColorDrop!
  • Smear Decals (7): All the decals in this set are large isolated marks of ink scanned in high resolution, meant to be layered up and used in a variety of ways. The Smear Decals are just as they sound, smears! Great to use as shadows and other softer gradients.
  • Edge Decal (1): Sometimes you just want to add a gnarly looking edge to something straight, and this will do the trick!
  • Roller Decals (3)These are large rectangular marks with wonderful texture. We made these with rubber brayers and india ink. These are some of my favorites!
  • Sharp Decals (4): Extra harsh, angular, with the highest contrast. Sometimes you want to add crispness and grit, and these are perfect for the job.
  • Soft Decals (4): These are fuzzier/softer/less angular and more suited for gradient and shading, but they're very solid, so also great for blocking in large areas.
  • Smudgers (2): There are two smudger brushes, the Finger Smudger and the Pencil Smudger. As you might expect, these are meant to be used with the smudge tool, either with the Apple Pencil or your finger, depending on what you've got. But interestingly they can yield exciting and unexpected results when used as a regular brush too! These are absolutely essential for adding smears to your silhouettes, and add a HUGE amount of expression.
  • Speckles (3): There are 3 "Speckled" brushes, which were made by splattering ink on paper from further away. Fine Speckles, Medium Speckles, and Dense Speckles.
  • Shaders (5): These are meant for finishing touches at the end of your illustration, or to occasionally add subtle hints of texture throughout. Harsh Grit Shader (and Light) yields a nasty photo-copier texture. Toner Shader is amazing for adding shines to dark spots, it really unifies texture and looks more realistic. Damp Brayer Shader and Dry Brayer Shader add an effect like the paper has been rubbed against a table or is very old. Layer these all in different amounts with different colors for exciting finishing effects!

You'll need the latest version of procreate (at least version 4.2) to take advantage of all the brush features, and DEFINITELY an Apple Pencil.

Procreate 5 is here, and its amazing! You can now install a LOT of brushes at once using the new Files app in iOS 11. We recommend backing up your purchase using an iCloud account (its free), or syncing them to Files with iTunes.

First things first... USE SAFARI on iPad!

Also make sure you open the link in the full Safari app (it must be Safari, no other browser will work), as the side-loaded one that gmail/other email apps use won’t work.

Note: Brush files end in *.brushset

Once you click the file name/download button, a blue arrow in a circle should appear in the top right corner of Safari. This is the "downloads" area. Tap this icon and you should see your download appear in a list like so:

Simply tap the file and it should automatically open in Procreate. Depending on if you've performed this before, it may ask you what you want to do with the file after tapping it, in which case you would simply find the Procreate icon and send it there.
