Introducing our flagship paint brushes, Acrylic Paint! We've gone back to the drawing board and re-imagined a modern painters toolkit. Perfect for fantasy painting and other forms of high realism, these brushes mix colors together realistically, and offer dynamic and professional-grade handling.

This set was designed for both painting and also the smudge tool (which adds extra realism). Not only is this set perfect for realistic traditional painting, you can also "smudge" photo elements to look like paintings, just like with our oil paint set! With new advances in AI art generation, this becomes a valuable tool for further manipulating images.

The brushes:

  • Acrylic Gold Streak - This is a very flexible flat brush capable of fine streaks and and glazes, one of our favorites of this set. Extremely dynamic and adds lots of character with bold finishing strokes.
  • Flat Brush Glaze - Another flat brush this one is even more suited for glazing layers of color to build up truly rich and detailed textures just like on a real canvas.
  • Dry Bristle Mix - this brush has a more opaque quality but very streaky as if the bristles of the brush are fairly dry. I like this for adding an expressive loose contour.
  • Fineliner Wet - This brush has a smaller line, more precise, but still has a "wet paint" feel to it, which is very useful for detail and lines.
  • Fine Hair Bristles - This is a super useful brush for feathering and blending. Very sensitive to pressure and works at many sizes.
  • Super Wet - A very soft and very wet brush that stirs pigment up like crazy!
  • Smudge Wet Liner - A fine line that still offers a painterly look. this is mainly a "smudge" brush, meant to be used with the smudge tool (the finger icon next to the brush icon in Procreate) for blending.
  • Canvas - For adding a broken canvas texture to areas of flat/boring colors. Works great as a smudger and picks up surrounding colors.
  • Paint Noise - Adds visual interest with a painterly texture to flat areas. An extremely useful brush not to be underestimated! I find strategic use of the paint noise brush to be incredibly helpful with blending tones and breaking up flat areas of color.
  • Acrylic Rake Quad - This is a 4-pronged rake brush for adding contour lines, its also helpful for adding expression and visual interest, for example the goat horns in the poster art.
  • Airbrush Mist - Fantasy illustrators make heavy use of airbrushes so we fine tuned this one to work well for glows.
  • Soft Brush - This is our generic "soft brush" with pressure sensitive and behavior just how we like it. Very useful for masking and other technical uses.

Smudge Photos Into Paintings

While these are amazing painting brushes, they've also been designed from the ground up to work equally-well as Smudge tool brushes! These brushes are GREAT for integrating photos into your artwork aka "photobashing". Simply select your brushes with the Smudge tool, and begin moving the pigment around in the image, lending a painterly touch.

Some tips for photo smudging:

  • Start with a small brush, so that you can simplify small areas of color/value but keep detail.
  • The idea is to simplify your image, without blurring. Be careful to preserve details.
  • Lift your pen whenever you move to a new tone.
  • Try to begin your smudge from the center of the tones you're simplifying. For example, you can exaggerate a small white highlight by first touching your pen to the center of the area, and gently stirring the pigment around.
  • Edges! To get a painterly look, give your subject expressive edges by using the eraser tool or the smudge tool. Experiment with different brushes!
  • Do you have any big flat areas of color? Use the "paint noise" brush, sample a slightly lighter color and scumble in painterly texture to break up the flatness.
  • The liquify tool is your friend! Use "Edge" mode in the Liquify tool to add back definition to lines, and use Push and Twirl to add a liquid effect.

Procreate 5 is here, and its amazing! You can now install a LOT of brushes at once using the new Files app in iOS 11. We recommend backing up your purchase using an iCloud account (its free), or syncing them to Files with iTunes.

First things first... USE SAFARI on iPad!

Also make sure you open the link in the full Safari app (it must be Safari, no other browser will work), as the side-loaded one that gmail/other email apps use won’t work.

Note: Brush files end in *.brushset

Once you click the file name/download button, a blue arrow in a circle should appear in the top right corner of Safari. This is the "downloads" area. Tap this icon and you should see your download appear in a list like so:

Simply tap the file and it should automatically open in Procreate. Depending on if you've performed this before, it may ask you what you want to do with the file after tapping it, in which case you would simply find the Procreate icon and send it there.
